Very positive. Talked through many things. Mutual enjoyment of Christian’s (the carpenter’s) doodles of skateborders among the sketches of carpentry features he’d drawn on the boards.

Journaling Course: State-changers

Next was the creative journaling course. That went well. Looks like we have about seven regulars. Parts seemed to drag a bit, but overall it was good. There is an affective or perhaps therapuetic aspect to journaling that doesn’t grab me.

But other parts are working well for me.

Robert brought up the idea of state-changers, things during the day — taking a walk, a cold shower, going to a different environment, that can get assist one in getting into a new activity.

Kathy mentioned cathedral bells, which made me think of the ways in which religious orders structure time. I’d like to learn more about that.

For my own use, I’d like a state-changer that can serve as a trigger for an activity (e.g., like journal writing). I decided I would try keeping a notebook and pen in the car, and see if I could use my post-run cool-down period as a moment to record thoughts from during the run.

GC Prep / Walk.

After class Kathy and I met up in Lakewood for a short training hike. We caught up, and talked about how we wanted to train — in particular, the need for practicing uphill and down, more so than length. While there we observed an elderly man — Chinese perhaps — lighting incense sticks and placing them at a series of graves. Kathy apologized for the disturbance as we passed by the edge of the area he was working in. There was a nice memorial bench with a refreshingly modern sentiment on it: ‘I was born. Shortly after that I became awesome!’

Memorial bench in Lakewood Cemetery :”I was born. This led to going back to the blog, which — as we can see here — I have also decided to use for daily entries per our assignment. For this to really work for my purposes, i need to make everything public so that diary entries and ‘promising bits I don’t want to lose’ will show up in the margin and filters. One was Christian’s skateboarder sketches, one of which I will capture for the class image assignment. Another was the funny epitaph.

I didn’t think I had much, but once you start writing things come up. And there were even some moments of delight.

#

For the rest of the day, my plans are (1) get prepared for World Building, and see if I can come up with more of a plan/curriculum for that. (2) Practice piano a bit. (3) Pick some more cherries, or pit those that I have.

Wednesday 30 June 2021 A busy day.
