Writing; Buzzing arms; R chat

Friday 3 June 2021

Good morning. I had two pleasant chats this morning, both quite pleasant. I dispensed with a run, as KMS needed a lift and I didn’t want to feel rushed.

Writing

In between the two PCs, I went through the notes from the last world building course meeting. We had a series of in-class exercises — writing a sentence or three in response to image prompts —that I didn’t feel went very well. Just afterwards I felt I’d done quite poorly relative to others in the class (people were encouraged to post their responses in the chat).

But when I revisited the material today I felt better: my responses were not so bad, and with a few exceptions the other responses were not that much better.

  • More importantly, I analyzed the responses I thought were good and got a sense of what I liked about them (e.g., not just describing the image but setting up a problem or creating tension that will move the story forward). I took what I learned from that and went back and improved what I’d written.

Errands/Ride

Now I am sitting outside a medical building (KMS just has a routine appointment). After awhile KMS showed up and said that it went fine, and we drove home. We went our separate ways at home, and after a bit I took a bike ride to Minihaha park and had my customary half-a-beer — well, this time I consumed nearly three quarters of it. It was some sort of IPA (it was called “alien” somethingorother), although not the hazy kind which I have been inclined to recently.

Hand/Arm Buzzing

During my rides this year — this may only be my third — I’ve end up with a very unusual sort of buzzing feeling in my arms, like when a limb goes to sleep, except this is a bit more of an active sort of buzzing. This time I tried to pay more attention to changing my posture and shifting how I place weight on my arms, and had no such problems. Perhaps I should trying cycling gloves, although my sense is that the problem is more from pressure on my shoulder joints than my wrists. Anyway, it as a nice ride, and even with temperatures around 90 the moving air kept me comfortable.

Chat with R

Shortly after I returned home, while cooling down on the porch, RD passed by and called out a hello. I invited him up to the porch, and although he’d said he could only stop by for a minute, a voice from inside the house called “come in,” and “margaritas.” So we ended up on the porch with drinks, chips and Chica (his cute fluff-ball of a half-chihuahua), and had a nice chat, all the more pleasant for its impromptu nature. A second round of margaritas left me ready for a nap after he departed, and I did that, followed with a shower to wake myself up, and here we are!

For the remainder of the day I think I will read, work on my writing courses, and do a bit of piano. Dinner seems likely to be a casual affair centered around leftover salmon and lake trout that we grilled last night.
