GC Prep; Piano; &c

Wednesday-Thursday 7-8 July 2021

Two days have passed.

Wednesday is the busy day of the week, with two classes spanning four hours: one in the morning and one in the evening.

In between, KC and I went on a ‘training hike’ from Cold Spring to Ft. Snelling State Park. It was not much elevation change, but we covered about 4.5 miles. We chatted, KC pointed out various plants, and I saw an interesting landform: some kind of very soluble limestone that was dissolving in the rain and then resolidifying after it had oozed down a bit. It reminded me of Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia with some of its ‘sandcastle’ architecture.

Thursday is the follow on from Wednesday, and due to the 4th of July holiday, also was occupied by my normally-on-Monday piano class.

Piano

During class, I was struck by how well Jose plays.

Sometimes, when I arrive, he is practicing, and I hear him playing complex and challenging pieces that he is working on — they sound good, but it’s difficult to judge. But today he played a bit of a blues piece I am learning to demonstrate a bit of rhythm I was messing up, and it sounded so much better. Not just because of the rhythm, but by the way the notes sounded when he pressed them, a certain fluidity. I though I had it down pretty well, but I can see that there are dimensions of playing that I am simply oblivious to — well, I can hear them, but I hadn’t before realized that they could be played that way.

Before piano I ran, and after piano I did some errands at the hardward store and grocery.

I also chatted with CS about geology outtings, and we identified two days for field trips. That will inspire me to read the notes I’ve downloaded more thoroughly, and put them in some sort of order.

On the class front, I feel like the journaling course is going quite well, at least vis a vis my objectives. I still don’t have a particular time of day I write, but I have developed ways of capturing thoughts, and places to write them down in, which is ceratinly helpful.

The Worldbuilding course is a bit rougher; I am enjoying the reading we’re doing, and the critiquing we have started, but am a bit worried about my ability to produce a story of workshopping by the 21st. I am doing well at capturing ideas, but am a little uncertain — and do not have a method or plan yet — for trying to produce a story.
